Castilian, another name for Spanish (espaol), is a Romance language that has its roots in the Spanish province of Castile. Spanish is the primary tongue of 406 million individuals. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the UN, and it is also recognised as such by the EU and Mercosur. Spanish is one of the most common second languages among Americans. The study of Spanish as a second language and the growth of international travel in several nations have both increased dramatically since the last ten years of the 20th century.
